Last week STEMCAP held a workshop for the young women in the Gemstone program with a scientist from the University of Utah and staff from the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA). Together the two led the YIC through a workshop in which they learned about the science behind cloud formation and the use of clouds in a variety of art pieces at UMFA. Following the presentation, YIC got to create their own watercolor palates using spices and other natural materials which served as a metaphor for the impurities in the air that are important ingredients in cloud formation. YIC learned watercolor painting techniques and used their handmade watercolors to paint clouds that they made into mobiles.
